The whispers of Maiko san, twisting and turning absent to our understanding as rituals leave us apart. There is something magical about their dance, the shamisen is fretless and only has three strings. The music is more tablature which is a form of musical notation indicating instrument fingering rather than musical pitches. The Geiko san’s voice has a pitch and tonality that sets the framework for the dance; a kind of narrative to the dance. It is a fascinating practice that takes us back in time a few hundred years. It is nice when tradition is preserved and practiced to perfection.
