Walking at a local Temple early this morning, I crossed this fruit like nut, referred to as Slang Nut. It was described as a nut that has medicinal properties. But many such remedies are innocuous, the toxicity from the Slang Nut can be fatal. The Slang Nut is used as a cure, and is still common to rural areas in South eastern Asia.

The plant’s origin is strychnine, a powerful chemical used in pesticides to kill small vertebrate animals. If humans eat the nut at one time, they will die, but the myth says, if it is consumed over a few day,s you can survive and it is effective. It is used to relive pain and cure but this is not a recommended as a common practice – never eat it.
