Malvasia Delle Lipari – Passito 2009 Fenech

Malvasia

This is one of my favorite, rich mocha, sweetness that tingles, it is delicious but I adore Hauner’s mMalvasia. The Lipari after which the DOC is named is the largest of the eight Aeolian Islands, and the most viticulturally productive volcanic soil. When left unchecked, a volcanic vineyard can lead to such wines that 19th-century French writer Guy de Maupassant said were, “sirop de soufre… le vin du diable” – “sulfur syrup… the devil’s wine”.

Malvasia delle Lippari’s future is protected by intervention, as demonstrated by Carlo Hauner, whose vineyards produce Italy’s last sweet Malvasia will be extinct long before the volcanoes above them.
