Miani White Wines – Colli Orientali

Miani, a small estate located in the Colli Orientali DOC area, the north of Italy, a hilly slice of the udine’s province near Italy’s border with slovenia. Enzo the wine maker produces a total of only 9000 bottles of red and white wines from thirteen hectares, and all according to rigorously organic farming methods. He ages many of his wines in french oak barrels, and does not interfere with the natural temperature of fermentation.

The grapes of miani wines grow on a total of 13 hectares, four directly owned by the family. The varieties of white wines grown are such varieties such as chardonnay, sauvignon, malvasia and friulano, producing 750 cases of wine each year. The altitude of the vineyards range from 100 to 300 meters above sea level, and the vine density in most of the vineyards is a relatively low 3000 plants per hectare.

While staying in the south of Italy, I tried numerous bottles of miani wines. His white wines are absolute cult wines owing to a remarkable depth of flavor and concentrated texture. They are not to be missed, enjoy them when you can as we did, together with regional cuisine.

Tocai Friulano Buri 2006 (90 Points): the wine had some problems, we tasted it with friends the next day, kept under argon gas (coravin) the wine was still not 100%. The conclusion was it was an off bottle.

Friulano Filip 2007 (95 Points): The 2007 is superb, good crisp acidity, exotic fruits, pineapple, coconuts and lichee nuts. This wine has excellent length and is not to be missed. It still has a ways to go, age will improve it.

Just a small note, miani was stopped from using ‘tocai’ as the name in 2007, due to the protection of the name tokaji, a hungarian sweet wine, which does not have any tocai friulano in it all. The friulano from friuli was known as “Tocai” Friulano until March 31, 2007 when the European Court of Justice of Luxembourg set the prohibition of using the name “Tocai”. Since 2007 Tocai Friulano is merely known as “Friulano” and is labeled as such.

Sauvignon blanc 2007 (92 Points): brisk acidity, a little tart at first it was balanced by fruit but the age hides in the background.

Ribolla 2000 (95+ Points): it is true I enjoy wine that has friendly fruit and this ribolla is a flashy wine. Youthful color, it looked perfect golden, honey and honey, it is hard to believe that it is 13 years old. Sponge toffee, it has consistency and power.
