We started with Ronchi’s Barbaresco, a producer we enjoy to drink and one of my drinking partners favorites. However I decided to order a Gaja and compare so what happened.
The Rochi was excellent but somehow the modernity of the Gaja’s fruit swiped away the dust off the Rochi bottle. I am not sure I can say that it’s a good comparison because these wines have different personalities and style. I think it was a toss-up.
Note: From what I understand is Angelo Rocca made critical changes over recent vintages. Most significantly he decided several years ago to move away from barriques and back to large format, neutral oak the ultimate vessel for Nebbiolo maturation.
