The word Maiko translates as “dancing child” and they apprentice as maiko san for minimum five-year period of training. During the training the maiko study traditional arts in many forms such as dancing, singing, and music. Many train and learn classical Japanese musical instruments such as; shamisen, shinobue, shime daiko, kotsuzumi, otsuzumi and koto.
