On the main street of Noto you’ll find cafe sicilia, a well know and established cafe serving some of the best known sweets from the region.
This is cassata siciliana is a traditional sweet, a kind of small round tart usually filled with sheep’s milk ricotta. Topped with frosting and sugared fruits, it is traditionally a winter and spring dessert served around Easter. Its name is believed to derive from the medieval Arabic kas’at in reference to the circular form, used to mold it.
