It just so happens that some foods are much better for you than you thought. Cladosiphon okamuranus referred to as “mozuku” is a type of edible seaweed naturally found in Okinawa. Mozuku is a common Japanese food, yet for some it is too slimy but is a source of one type of sulfated polysaccharide called Fucoidan.
Fucoidan is a natural food compound found in many forms of brown seaweed, and in animal models fucoidan exerts anti-inflammatory effects to protect against various organ injuries. Oral administration of fucoidan extracts also improved inflammatory pathology associated with acute colitis.
