Musashimaru Sumo Mochi 2016 – video

The mochi is an annual tradition all over Japan and each year we visit our local sumo-beya for pounding the annual mochi into cake, and I had a little taste (back of the house) of the curry, not for visitors but for the sumo wrestlers given they need high caloric meals.

This is made with tripe, beef and pork and is one very large pot over the BBQ, it gives some nourishment to the boys in training.

The mochi rice is steamed in the back of the house and then carried in for pounding by guests and wrestlers, and followed by pulling it, and the girls cover it with various toppings between sweet and savoury.
