What can you say about one of the greatest Italian wines after 59 years?
This bottle was in perfect condition and it had a small printed leaflet describing the history etc., and it was bound by a rope and onto the bottle by wax.
I thought it was perfectly correct and from my experience – these kinds of wines 59 years old are meant to be as one would expect from a wine of this age. Can you imagine it is sitting in a cellar and no one has dared to open it, so no doubt it was a true treasure.
The cork crumbled and there was little I could do ~ so I decanted it using a mescaline cloth to filter the cork. At first it was slightly musty as expected and some hints of cork and dark fruits but …if you compare it to a wine of this vintage, or a similar vintages you’ll find most of these types of wines are more or less of the same genre. You cannot expect it to taste modern and despite perfect storage and a waxed capsule atop, it doesn’t really help.
