Most of Italian famous pasta starts life in wheat fields here in Puglia. The region is in fact the largest producer of durum wheat. The popular tradition of Puglia is still linked to the cult of bread and its varieties. Trying different varieties of bread here is a must: About 100 different types of bread are produced, made from over 300 species of wheat. Among the others we mention the bread of Altamura (first bread in Europe to be awarded with the protection of quality marks PDO (Protected Designation of Origin)), undoubtedly the most famous bread for its crispness, it is made from durum wheat and yellow seed corn. Famous and characteristic are are “wheel of bread” that are baked in the province of Bari and Foggia, here a wheel of bread can weigh more than 10kg.
