Green tomatoes are often thought of in connection with “fried green tomatoes” a 1991 comedy drama but I cannot remember every frying them. I found these at the market and they were perfect, the skins tight, no sogginess (signs of bad storage), and the stems in perfect condition with small fuzz.
I always recommend smelling tomatoes when buying them, and if they smell too strong they are getting old. Tomatoes have odors and you can usually tell which kind of growing they use, which is the first hint.
Dry farmed tomato plants aren’t watered after their flowers set, forcing the plants to work a bit harder to make the tomatoes and leading to better, deeper flavor. The vine-ripened tomatoes are allowed to ripen on the vine before they are picked.
