The idea of reincarnation is a philosophical concept, where the soul or spirit, after biological death, begins a new life in a new body, depending on the moral quality of the previous life’s actions, good Karma.
The Monastic body in Gangtey Gonpa is led by the 9th reincarnation, Kunzang Pema Namgyal was recognized as the ninth successive Body emanation of Pema Lingpa by the l6th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche, H.H. Dilgo Khyentse, and other leaders of Vajrayana Buddhism. He was given the traditional education of an incarnate Lama, as a monk at Tongsa Monastery. Before he was formally enthroned at age 16, he took change of the abbot, and then took charge as spiritual head of his 35 private Nyingma monasteries and hermitages.
The 9th reincarnation was travelling and we were lucky to meet the II reincarnation, to sit and talk with him. He is a 17-year-old boy who is an important member of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, living under their Monastic body.
The myth goes as follows; when he was born, his mother was taken a back by an incident. Their house was surrounded by numbers of wild animals. Believed to protect him, she discovered that he spoke fluent Tibetan. So his mother carried him to the nearest Monastery where he was tested. In order to test his ability, they show him objects from the past, he identified then, and he was questioned him about his pst life and his teachers.
In his case, he is a high Tibetan master reincarnated II (Tobden), and when he turned 7, he moved to live in the Monastic body. He is a teacher and practices daily with his fellow Monks guiding them. He is planning a three-year meditation where he will be completely isolated in nature with rice and water.
The II reincarnation will become a leader of his own monastery by the time he is 20, and he is impressive, profound and empowered. We were all impressed with his teachings and his ability to read dreams. In particular, one of our fellow travellers daughter, she felt his energy as overwhelming. We too appreciated to meet him, his humbleness and simple way of life teaches us an important lesson.
A very cool kid, a big smile and a warm heart.
