Gangtey Ramming Earth – video

Walking into the charming village of Gangtey, we encountered a group of women with large wooden mallets. I couldn’t help to climb the ladder and get a closer look to see how an ancient process is still used a common practice.

Building a rammed-earth wall involves compressing a damp mixture of earth, gravel and clay (and lime) into an externally supported mould, creating solid walls of earth. Properly built rammed earth can withstand nature’s forces for thousands of years, as many ancient structures are still standing.
