Mushroom picking starts very early morning and its a muddy affair and contrary to popular belief, mushrooms do not grow in autumn, although the fall is the most conducive to their fruiting season.
First before making any assumptions, the weather must be sure to alternate between rain and sunshine. It is therefore quite plausible to find morels in the spring if it has rained heavily or other species.
All trees do not necessarily harbor the same fungi and knowing where to go makes it much easier. Their encounter is not by chance and some tree species fit better in the neighborhood of certain species of fungi. In the mountains, one of the most common varieties is the boletus pinophilus, a cèpe des pins associated with coniferous trees, particularly scots pine, or with high-altitude, broad-leaved trees.
