Traveling in western sicily, we were invited to a box of Fragaria vesca. These are wild strawberries and a perennial herbaceous plant that grows naturally throughout much of Europe. Each year the plants leaves and stems die down at the end of the growing season to the soil level, and grow again from seeds.

It is by far one of our favorite fruits in spring :-).
