One time in Miami, we went to a friends to enjoy what he called phenomenal ceviche and he insisted. It wasn’t long after that we left, my wife immediately felt sick with abdominal pains and nausea. It lasted the day and then she recovered.
These days, we all eat raw fish some time or another and rarely do we feel so bad. But then again, we can easily get affected by parasites, some not so serious, while others much more. For those that stay away from raw fish there is no worry, however, if you enjoy raw fish, you need to know the risks of Anisakis.
This is a human parasitic infection of the gastrointestinal tract caused by the consumption of raw or undercooked seafood containing larvae. It is frequently reported in areas of the world where raw fish is consumed, lightly pickled or salted. The areas of highest prevalence are Scandinavia (cod livers), Japan (sushi), the Netherlands’ maatjes herring, and along the Pacific coast of South America from eating ceviche.
