One of the more eccentric things in town of Noboribetsu is a large, slightly garish statue of a sitting monk with gigantic hands and a large hat. This is eccentric because a few times a day the head is replaced by that of an Oni, as it transforms by mechanical moving eyes and mouth, as it who waves his arms around and spouts out intimidating towards the crowd of onlookers. Oni is part of Japanese folklore and so if you have any interest in this subject see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oni
